Course Synopsis:

Did you know? New York State Throughway Authority concluded that the installation of shoulder rumble strips reduced run-off-road crashes by 88% and fatalities by 95% between 1991 and 1997.

Reducing crashes and easing traffic congestion on highways often requires significant expenditure, but many times a cost-effective solution can be achieved by lower cost solutions.  This course serves as a primer, or basic instruction, to low cost traffic engineering improvements.  It provides practicing engineers and planners with information describing some low cost actions that have been implemented.

Course Objectives:

This course teaches specific engineering knowledge and skills regarding Low Cost Traffic Engineering Improvement (LCTEI):

  • Introduction and definitions regarding low cost traffic engineering improvements
  • Description of several implemented LCTEI
  • Why LCTEI are important
  • Examples of benefits derived from implementing LCTEI
  • Descriptions of several low cost approaches to increasing safety and mitigating congestion
