Course Synopsis:

Did you know? The same materials used for highway centerline striping applies to edgeline striping but for one exception: the MUTCD prohibits reflective pavement markers (RPM’s) either as a substitute for or supplement to the edge line.  The rationale is that at night in wet conditions and only RPM’s are visible, edgeline RPM’s can confuse drivers who could misinterpret them as markings for lane lines.

This course describes relatively low cost treatments to horizontal curves to (1) help reduce the likelihood of a vehicles leaving its lane and crossing the roadway centerline or leaving the roadway on a horizontal curve and (2) minimize damaging consequences of a vehicle leaving the roadway at a horizontal curve.

Course Objectives:

This course teaches specific engineering knowledge and skills regarding Low Cost Treatments for Horizontal Curve Safety:

  • Introduction, Scope, Basis of Need, and Publication Organization
  • Basic and Enhanced Basic Treatments
  • Other Traffic Control Basic Treatments
  • Rumble Strips
  • Minor Roadway Improvements
  • Innovative and Experimental Treatments
